Significados e sentidos da deficiência adquirida em policiais militares

Resumo: The analysis of the role that the Militar Police occupy in society allows observing the strong relationship between this organization and the idea of authority, strengh and bodily integrity. Those aspects are greatly distant from the socially constructed and stigmatized picutre of people with disabilities. Despite the apparent incongruity between such characters, the acquisition of a disability during the activity performance is a real possibility in those individuals lives, given the conditions of physical risk that officers are usually subjected to. The study was supported by theoretical and methodological assumptions of Cultural-Historical Psychology, in which the work is seen as the human vital activity, and has fundamental importance in the development of the psyche. The aim of the study was to identify the set of meanings related to disability and Military Police to officers who acquired any disability, in order to understand their influence on participant's life stories. Seven military officers with disabilities were interviewed for the research, six retired and one active. Data analysis was done by the construction of cores of meanings, capable of expressing the properties of the whole, in its genesis and determination. Three cores of meanings were identified: the expression of work as fundamental activity; conditions of existence: transformation that follow the acquisition of a disability; conditions of existence: relations of social support. The results indicated that the meanings associated to the Military Police and to disability are related to the participants life stories, objectified in their reports. To the officers, the job on Military Police has achieved the status of vital activity, influencing their personalities constructions.
