Research related to ayahuasca has received special attention in the context of scientific investigations, given its growing use and increasing number of new adepts around the world. Thus, this study aims at understanding the reason and experiences of using ayahuasca and other compounds in a municipality in a border region among Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. This is a descriptive and qualitative study, which was carried out using the focal group technique. Convenience sampling was applied and the adapted people of ayahuasca and other compounds use were chosen by the following characteristics: aged 18 years or older, with experience within the last six months, in institutions in Foz do Iguaçu-PR city. After meeting ethical standards, socioeconomic and health data were collected using a questionnaire to obtain a profile. The focal group technique was applied to understand the users’ reasons and experiences. Data were analyzed by content analysis. The participants’ profile is predominantly composed of middleclass males, whose reasons were primarily rooted in self-development and search for the meaning of life. The effects have contributed singularly to each participant in their several reported experiences. It can be concluded that the use of ayahuasca and other compounds have produced diverse and multiple results in the participants. Such uses make up the current scenario in which alternative measures are gaining notable space among integrative forms of treatment. Thus, new information has been under repercussion on the current phenomenon related to psychedelics, which provide elements for researchers in this area to think about its use, effects, and reasons in a municipality located in a triple border region.
