Resumo: | Care constitutes an essential function of nursing and it justifies the actions and competences of the professional nurse, which confer the professional identity of this category, making it differentiated among all health professions. Transcultural nursing works on the knowledge of the individual's cultural beliefs and values in order to seek culturally congruent care. Serving a population with multicultural characteristics is one of the great challenges for professional nurses in their work. This reality is found in the municipality of Foz do Iguaçu, known for housing several ethnic groups. The study had as general objective: To understand the perspective of nurses about culture and cultural care in a border city. And as specific objectives: To identify cross-cultural nursing care, based on the Sunrise model, from the experiences of nurses in primary health care; Knowing the nurses' perspective on culture and cultural care in a border municipality, as well as on their training to perform culturally congruent care; To detect parental cultural practices in newborn care and transcultural care actions by nurses in primary health care, in childcare. This is a qualitative research, with a descriptive and exploratory approach, guided by Madeleine Leninger's Theory of Transcultural Care as a theoretical framework. 18 nurses participated in the study, allocated in 15 health units, distributed in the five districts that make up the primary health care in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, PR. Data collection took place between January 2020 and January 2021, through individual semi-structured interviews, in person and via WhatsApp application. Data analysis was performed using thematic content analysis. The results found were presented through three articles, namely: Transcultural care in the experience of nurses in primary health care; Cultural care in a border region: perspective of nurses in primary health care; and Parental cultural practices in the care of newborns and Transcultural care actions by nurses. Cross-cultural nursing care by PHC nurses takes place empirically and intuitively, based on their experiences, without support from a theoretical framework or health education. Even so, it was possible to identify, in their practices, factors that influence health and modes of action of cultural care, recommended in the Sunrise model. For them, culture is everything that the individual brings as a response from his environment, from birth, passed on from generation to generation. In this sense, parenting practices in the care of the newborn are based on the family's cultural beliefs and values, and it is up to the nurse to listen sensitively and respect the popular practices used, when possible. It is recommended that higher education nursing courses, particularly in border municipalities, present nursing theories in the training of nurses, especially the Transcultural Theory of Care, due to the multiculturalism existing on the border. The adoption of competency-based curricula, with culture as a transversal component in teaching, can be a differential in training. In addition, it is recommended to offer courses for training in foreign languages. |
