Resumo: This thesis is the result of research carried out within the scope of the Graduate Program in Geography, from the State University of Western Paraná, Francisco Beltrão Campus, in line of research Education and Teaching of Geography. The research had as study theme the Colégio Estadual Mário de Andrade (CEMA) located in the city of Francisco Beltrão and its Regional Historical Role in the teaching of Geography in the period from 1964 to 1982. We seek to know what is the role of the institution in that context? What were the foundations of teaching geography? What were the working conditions of the professors of that discipline? In those 18 years, CEMA contributed with various teaching modalities offered to adolescents and young people in the region. The clipping corresponds to the period of creation and consolidation of this public educational institution. In this trajectory/process, the participation of the community, local leaders, public authorities and the School Sisters of Our Lady was relevant. The central objective of the research was to analyze the regional historical role of Colégio Estadual Mário de Andrade (CEMA) in the teaching of Geography in the period from 1964 to 1982, articulated to national and local transformations. Our analysis followed a dialectical perspective based on the following methodology: a) analysis of primary sources such as: laws, decrees, documents, resolutions, periodicals, among others; b) analysis of bibliographic sources, such as: articles, books, theses, dissertations that dealt with the theme; c) interviews with former principals, students, professors, people from society who passed through the institution. As for the teaching of Geography, the investigation showed the scarcity of material for teaching Geography. Colégio Mário de Andrade was, for a certain time, the only institution to offer secondary and vocational education in the municipality and region. A significant part of liberal professionals, among them: lawyers, accountants, nurses, engineers, doctors, teachers and the business class of the municipality and the region, at a certain moment in history, attended the classrooms of Colégio Estadual Mário de Andrade. There is no doubt that this educational institution fulfilled its function. By offering teaching at its different levels, it provided access to geographic knowledge, fulfilling, as far as possible, its social and educational function, promoting the professional and citizenship training of regional youth. The documental sources also demonstrated that in the institution, the teaching of Geography was more focused on the physical aspects of geographic science. We verified through documents found and interviews that the teaching of critical Geography in CEMA, occurred in a moment after the cut. Through a partnership between the State and the School Religious of the Nossa Senhora da Glória Institute, it was possible to solve part of the difficulties encountered related to the organization of the Gymnasium secretary and the increase in the number of rooms for a smooth progress of education. When the State rented part of the structure of the Institute from the sisters, and the religious took over the direction of the institution for a period, with the necessary adjustments, the quality of teaching improved in parts.
