Resumo: This study has the objective of analyzing, based on the French Discourse Analysis approach, the functioning of the journalistic discourse present on Veja magazine in the special report about Brazilian medium sized cities entitled Cidades Médias , published on September 1st, 2010. The report was chosen as object of this study for being in a representative newsmagazine in the Brazilian context and for bringing Cascavel as one of the main cities amongst the twenty ones listed. For this reason, the report about the this city in Paraná state constitutes the main object of our corpus. As Veja is the leading weekly magazine in Brazil, it assumes an authority in the national media, producing an effect that could add topics in the journalistic agenda. In the special report about the metropolis of the future , Veja discursively constructs a scenario of development for the interior of Brazil caused by industrialization. The meanings produced in the reports are the ones in which the cities develop, modernize, increase the offer on health and education and allow people to reach financial success, all of this due to the industries. From what the theoretical and methodological device of the Discourse Analysis permits, we propose to analyze the discursive materialities of the magazine in order to reach the comprehension of the meaning effects, which unveil a relationship of the language inscribed in history. Therefore, we question the naturalization of meanings, effect of the ideology that interpellates the subjects. In order to work on the analysis of Veja newsmagazine discursive processes, we have chosen some discursive sequences and photographs from the special report. In addition, we have also selected other discursive materialities that followed this publication: the reader‟s letters edited in the following two editions of Veja and advertisement pieces broadcasted in Cascavel. All the research is based mainly on studies of Pêcheux (2009 [1988]), Orlandi (2010a [1999]; 2007 [1992]) and Mariani (1998). With this organization, we believe it is possible to work in a position that questions the transparency effect of the language, considering the ideological crossing and the decentering of the subject in the meaning production.
