Resumo: This dissertation deals with the problems of economic development, trying to understand the complex relationships that have been established between State and economy within Brazil, Santa Catarina and the region of Chapecó (SC). From 1930, but mainly in the 1950s, Brazil built an industrial project in which the state acted as the main agent of economic development. Influenced by this process, Santa Catarina undertook a similar project from the 1960s, in which the state will be reformulated by an alliance between techno-bureaucrats and part of the political and economic “elite” of Santa Catarina. In the West of Santa Catarina this project is extended by allies of this “elite”, and it is in this process that we see the construction of the bases to make Chapecó the "capital of the West".
