Resumo: |
This work identifies and analyzes the main reasons associated with the decision of farmers to use the process of digestion for the treatment of pig slurry, with a focus on producers in the city of Toledo - PR. In order to do so, this investigation begins with the presentation of the growing concentration of swine production and waste in some municipalities of Paraná State, especially in the Western Region and in the city of Toledo. In addition, the potential impact of waste pollution is highlighted, especially in terms of their concentration, attending mainly to the impending limit of the development of the productive chain as a function of environmental problems. Besides, this research also presents the main alternatives for the correct treatment of waste, with emphasis on the treatment through the biodigestion process, which produces usable and/or marketable products such as biofertilizer, biogas and carbon credits. The theoretical and analytical backgrounds of investigation chosen were based on the theory of Schumpeterian Competition and Model Systems Approach of Agroindustrial Business presented by Farina et al. (1997). The identification of the properties was made from primary data survey of 311 properties from the archives of the Environmental Institute of Paraná (IAP) as well as with thirty interviews of the farmers. The properties were analyzed and classified according to some characteristics, especially regarding the use or not of the biodigestion treatment. 167 properties were identified using digesters and 164 did so, primarily in terms of being integrated to/ partners of an agroindustrial slaughtering and processing company installed in the city, which has a program that, on loan, provides full technical and financial assistance for the installation of digesters, including being responsible for the paperwork for validation and commercialization of the carbon credits generated. For the other three properties, one also works on loan, but with another company, specializing in the market for carbon credits; and the two other digesters were installed by the owner s own interest and resources, and only these use the biogas for purposes other than simply burning for conversion of methane into carbon dioxide and for marketing the carbon credits. Thus, the main reason identified for the installation of digesters was the initiative of the integrating company, which was motivated by the creation of the market for carbon credits under the clean development mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol. |
