Resumo: Higher education has been the focus of significant discussions over the last few years both nationally and abroad, bringing up relevant topics such as university education. Through this theme, that we have decided to investigate, with the assumption that university education corresponds to a proficuous research area, due to it being “rugged terrain, filled with possibilities, but also filled with gaps and areas of doubt that beg to be investigated” ( ÁVILA, 2013. p.19). In this sense, the main objective of this research is to present a production map (of theses and dissertations) and of the discussion on university education that have taken place and been realized in all of the post graduate stricto sensu programs available in the public universities found in the State of Parana and in the PUC-PR, from the year 2000 through 2013. The purpose of this map would be to show the “state in which the art finds itself to be in”, in this research area and to point out, by means of an analysis of the summaries the evident and silenced themes in the discussions taken place regarding university education. That is due to the fact that we certain questions that must be answered, among them: how many theses and dissertations that have themes regarding university education that were produced, starting from the year 2000 all through to the year 2013, in the public universities found in the State of Parana and in the PUC-PR? In which post graduate stricto sensu programs can we find evidence of this theme? In which year can we find the greatest amount put forth? What are the discussions held regarding university education? Which are the themes focused on in these discussions and which ones demand further investigation? In order for us to reach our objectives, as well as find the answers we are looking for, we are basing our study on a methodology called “state in which the art finds itself to be in”, characterized by being bibliographical; qualitative (descriptive and analytical), and utilizing the interpretative technique based on content analysis (BARDIN, 1977). Our hypothesis is based on the assumption that the discussions about university education are centered around the post graduate stricto sensu programs regarding education and that have, at its core, themes relating to the absence of public policies regarding the qualifications necessary in order to teach and provide a higher education, effectively silencing any discussion of certain themes such as the ethical background of a university professor playing a role in their qualifications. Data was gathered electronically through digital libraries, academic archives, Cape’s thesis and dissertation banks and internet sites from public universities found in the State of Parana and in the PUC-PR. The data gathering was done using the following search terms: higher education, university learning, university education and university professor. From the analysis of preliminary data, we can see that the discussions regarding university education, make up a large portion of the papers produced in the time period studied. Out of 306 papers put forth with a theme dealing with higher education, 106 of them specifically deal with university education, corresponding 34% of the total. It is also evident that most of the papers that deal with university education seem to come from post graduate stricto sensu education majors, totaling up 78% of them. In 2013, of all the papers presented before a committee, 14% were about university education. 2006 saw a significant increase in papers presented relevant to university education, totaling 13%. We consider relevant to point out that out of 106 papers put forth and presented, 58 of them were done so in PUC-PR, representing 54%. In light of the data presented, we hope to highlight the importance of the investigation in the hope that it will give way to new research done in the topic and theme at hand, demonstrating the need to put some thought into the complex and contextualized world that is university education.
