Resumo: This work intends to analyze the economic structure of the private education sector in Salvador, as well as to evaluate the relevance of a conscious competitive strategy for the success of these institutions. In order to do so, a questionnaire was sent to all basic education private schools in Salvador, and secondary data has been obtained at the Educational Censuses accomplished by INEP - National Institute of Studies and Education Researches, between 1996 and 2001, and at the main newspaper in Salvador: Jornal À Tarde. Moreover, a a case study has been conducted at the Sartre School, aiming to identify its competitive strategies, how they have been conceived, their actual creators and its influence on the school economic performance.
