Resumo: This thesis is the result of concerns that arose in the work of the author during the Master's dissertation, entitled Family Allowance: analysis of the program in municipalities of Aramari Alagoinhas-BA. When I was dealing with low-income populations whose access to education, health, leisure, security, is restricted as well as work on a Federal Institute for Education, that educate agricultural technicians, one question surfaced: if the interaction between this area of training and community of family farmers were a reality, to what dimension it would allow significant changes, generating local regional development? Thus, this work presents the history of the Federal Institute, especially the Campus Catu and its socio-historical context, and to achieve its objective, describes the profile of the family farm, its origin and territorial differences within the country. Field research has united these two aspects: the study about on the state of family farming in the region of the Wild North Littoral of Alagoinhas, where the Campus is inserted and the function of the Institute, teachers and some technical administrative staff, depending on the area. The high investments of Federal Government in professional education have, among its objectives, the collaboration for the development of the nation. This range tended to only be possible from that specific sector, if each constituent part acts, seeing the reality and the community that is around you. What are the alternatives that are placed for those who stayed on the sidelines of the economic progress which, in most cases, show intrinsic other human needs? As the various freedoms are reaching to people of the same nation and living realities so far apart? These issues permeate for the political, public policies, the role of civil society, by institutions of education that should not disrupt teaching, research and extension. This is the focus of the thesis detached in its research problem, which is: is there a potential to generate local and regional development in a possible relationship between the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology Baiano, Campus Catu and the community of family farmers of the Wild North Littoral of Alagoinhas? During this work it was possible to analyze, not closed, but that seeks to contribute to the understanding of social relations that construct and reconstruct, and for that reason, we believe ourselves in its relevance to society as a whole, especially to the community that is within the range of action of IF Baiano and family farmers from the city of Catu Bahia.
