Resumo: This report aims at studying on the natural attributes of Rio Preto do Criciúma region, in the city of Jequié in order to suggest a policy of sustainable development and environmental conservation through ecotourism, integrated to the needs of the local community. For this purpose, the community of Rio Preto do Criciúma inserted in a socio-economic cultural and environmental context related to sustainable development and ecotourism, as a kind of tourism focused on nature. In the theoretical framework, the analyses was developed from primary sources, with semistructured interviews with ecologists, environmentalist, authorities, residents and members of GERC (Rio das Contas Ecological Group), due to the scarcity of documentary sources especially by political organizations. Though the observation on-the-sport and supported by GERC documents is was observed that in stretches of Atlantic Forest remaining spot, there is an exuberance fascinating which of charms, not only by the magnificence of beautiful and centennial trees, like Vinhático, Jacarandá-da Bahia, Cedar, Jequitibá, Castanheira-do-reino, Ipê, Louro, Massaranduba, Pau-brasil, among water tank since there have been several sources of rivers creeks and streams, mountains, trails, waterfalls and the presence of several species of avid animals complete the idyllic setting, favorable to activities related to ecotourism. The community perception about the place is full identity, in recognition of their beauty and the need for preservation. But there is the necessity of the effective participation of the public authorities in several ways, private´s, NGOs´, the insertion of the local community for the introduction and support of an ecotouristic activity in the region.
