In the last few years we have seen a growing demand for network solutions that integrate different kinds of services, like data, voice and image, reducing costs and increasing productivity. These implementations, however, may be a great challenge. The difficulty lies in assuring the quality of continuous media services, like voice and video, and in the transmission of priority data, especially when the used networks have not been designed for carrying real-time traffic with assured Quality of Service. Additional technical problems may occur in this kind of implementation. These problems are generally not easy to anticipate and will make this even a greater challenge. This dissertation presents the solutions adopted on the project and implementation of a large network using Cisco products. It uses the most recent developments for Voice over IP transmission and Quality of Service techniques, like those for Differentiated Services standard. This document points out the problems found during the project, the analyses carried out and the options that were considered in order to achieve the ideal cost x benefit relationship. This document is designed to help during all phases of a project lifecycle, from analysis to implementation of large networks with integrated services of data and voice. It can be used as a road map for a similar kind of project. |
