The following dissertation intends to analyze how the tourist activity has influenced the regional development in a town named Conde, in the north shore of Bahia State, in Brazil. Within the process a brief history of the studied place is presented, in which its geographic, demographic, social-economic, infra-structural aspects are described as well as its natural attractions, history and culture. It is a research that aims to understand the tourist phenomenon s reality, its social and environmental influences, and its contribution to local development. It emphasizes the geographical, historical, environmental and social-economic aspects; describes the indicators of social-cultural changes and the potential impacts on the environment; and shows tourism development from the point of view of native residents. To accomplish this goal, there was done a qualitative approach research, case study type, with field visits in order to carry out semi-structured interviews, using a non-probabilistic by judgment sample applied to the local community and a non-probabilistic by accessibility one applied to the tourists, as well as the consulting of secondary documents. Some indicators of socio-cultural changes were also used as a means of organizing and presenting the analysis of data, fruit of the field research. All in all, it is hoped that through the analysis of the collected data, we can elucidate the factors that put at risk the efficiency of the relation between tourism, the community and the search for local development under sustainable basis.
