Resumo: The hotel industry is essential for, together with transport systems, food services and the tourist attraction, to enable the development of tourism anywhere. As the paradigm of this century, it is intended to develop sustainable tourism, that is, that meets the current needs of tourists and tourist regions and at the same time protects and fosters opportunities for the future. Therefore, the hotel activity must also be environmentally sustainable and to achieve this goal it is necessary to manage this activity through an environmental management system, understood as part of the global management system of an organization that includes all Their characteristics for satisfactory environmental performance. A review of the technical literature on the subject has shown that few scientific works are designed to study this system, thus characterizing a gap to be explored. The objectives of this dissertation are to propose an Environmental Management System for the hotel industry following the guidelines of the international standard ISO 14001 and also to develop field studies in an attempt to characterize the distance of the management currently applied by the sector with the proposed Environmental Management System. The first part of the objective, by its theoretical characteristic, is based on a documentary and descriptive methodology, while the analyzed cases have a qualitative-quantitative nature. As results obtained from this dissertation we have a widely applicable Environmental Management System and the confirmation that the hotels studied, located in Rio de Janeiro, 3 stars and independent still need to design policies, plans and environmental programs that include the anthropic environment to achieve The environmental sustainability of the hotel industry.
