Resumo: Considering the expressiveness of the sugar-energy activity in the Triângulo Mineiro/Alto Paranaíba region, and the relevance of its socio-environmental impacts, it is imperative to question the quality of the Environmental Impact Studies, for environmental licensing purposes. Even more valuable is the urgency to disseminate systemic geographic approaches that consider the interrelationship between society and nature in environmental studies. The main objective of this study is to analyze the environmental diagnosis contained in the Environmental Impact Studies (EIAs) of sucrogenergy enterprises, elaborated in the Triângulo Mineiro/Alto Paranaíba mesoregion from 2012 to 2015, to provide subsidies for the improvement of the Reference Term in light of the socio-environmental geography. The study was conceptually oriented by the contributions of geography in systemic approaches, by the understanding of the procedure of environmental licensing in the state, and by how the sector expansion happened in this region. An analysis was performed through analytical tables to infer the Procedural Effectiveness and Systemic Effectiveness of the studies. It is believed that, in the present conjecture of environmental issues, and all of its consequences faced by society, it is more important the search for new approaches that overcome the fragmented view of facts and all of its consequences, which put nature in antagonistic light, ignoring both the identification of several impacts and the appropriate path in the search for effective solutions to environmental issues.
