Resumo: The watercourse margins stand out as structuring elements of the landscape, as they are areas of constant tension between the urban and the natural. The uniqueness of these territories makes them present as mediators of the relationship between natural processes and urban processes, especially as an expression of this relationship. This research is based on the question of how cities have been conducting their relationship with watercourse margins. Its object of study is the city of Patos de Minas (MG), which reproduces the conflicts that exist in Brazilian cities in general. The objective of this work is to identify the relationship between spatial configuration and urban environmental quality of the watercourse margins of this city. The analysis was performed from the survey of Morphological Patterns, based on three categories of analysis: Spatial Configuration Patterns, Urban Insertion Patterns and Contact Patterns between cities and watercourse margins. With the study, it was possible to provide qualitative information of the urban landscape capable of supporting planning and design principles for structuring the open space system along the watercourse margins.
