Resumo: | This work investigates the use of multiple control surfaces (MSC) in the trailing edge of a wing to alleviate flight loads and to improve cruise efficiency in the development of general aircraft design. The proposed procedure is based on the use of the aerodynamic Doublet Lattice model, implemented in Nastran, applying the decambering technique to insert the airfoil characteristics. The benefits quantification of the use of MSC is obtained comparing the optimal solutions with a baseline configuration sized considering metallic components and without MSC actuation. In this context, four configurations are proposed: i) metallic wing without MSC actuation (baseline); ii) metallic wing with MSC actuation; iii) composite wing without MSC actuation; iv) composite wing considering MSC actuation. After carrying out structural optimizations for mass reduction and aerodynamic optimizations to improve the lift-drag ratio, the impact of both gains on the aircraft’s cruise flight performance was evaluated. The results indicated an incremental benefit in terms of mass savings, increased maximum range and increased payload. |
