Resumo: Among the entire team of professionals who take care of patients during their time of hospitalization before and after a surgery treatment, licensed practical nurses (LPN) are the closest and spend the most time involved with care to ensure the patient's full recovery. Several times, however, this closeness can generate distress and, not infrequently, the patient or it’s family may be the protagonist of violence against the nurse. Thus, this study tried to seeks data of the occurrence of violence suffered by nursing professionals during assistance to surgical patients. A study in two stages was carried out, involving, in the first moment, a quantitative, transversal, descriptive research to collect the data and typify the violence and, afterwards, having as reference the numbers obtained in the first survey, a qualitative study was made to know the impacts brought to the professional. For this, we applied the interview technique to two participants who answered the first questionnaire and reported having been victims of occupational violence. The study revealed that there is violence in this workplace reported by 59% of respondents, the majority being against female professionals (85%) and that most attacks occurred at night shifts (44%). It was also observed that occupational violence has an important negative impact on the quality of people's work activity, which few received assistance after the occurrence (12%) resulting in feelings of anger, stress and disappointment. The qualitative analysis of the data allowed us to classify the reports into meaning cores. It was concluded that the registered cases of occupational violence are related to communication difficulties, failures in multi-professional performance, and bad leading of managers and the institution in dealing with the cases. This study gave rise to three scientific articles presented as results, one with quantitative data, another with qualitative information and the third with the autoethnographic analysis of the research experience.
