This work has as object of study the city of Matias Cardoso, birthplace of the portuguese colonization in Minas Gerais and has great importance and cultural history to the "Norte de Minas". Despite this importance, the current policy of preserving the existing cultural heritage in the city has not secured the effective preservation of its unique and fallen - the Church of Our Lady of Conception, construction of the late seventeenth century, which has Heritage Institute Protection National Historical and Artistic - IPHAN - and does not consider other capital assets that constitute a cultural and natural wealth of the utmost importance for the affirmation of identity, relevance and peculiarity of the northern mining region in the forming process of Minas Gerais. From the understanding of the historical and cultural background of the city, and considering its social, environmental, territorial and legal aspects, we seek to highlight the existence of other symbolic elements in Matias Cardoso that make up its cultural and natural heritage and need to be recognized and preserved. For a greater appreciation of the cultural heritage of Matias Cardoso, it is necessary to change the view of the management of cultural heritage of the municipality, which extends the current preservation model - existing for over 60 years - to a new asset management model more inclusive. For this to occur, we are proposing a new approach to balance the city, from the concept of cultural landscape. We hope to demonstrate that this new asset management model, if applied to this territory, can bring recognition instruments of cultural value and natural of their assets and constitute a remarkable fact of man's relationship with the environment, which until then the current management model adopted in the city, points to the lack of adequate protection mechanisms.
