Deindustrialization is a complex phenomenon that has been the subject of debates and analyses in the conceptual, economic, and political spheres. This thesis aims to characterize the processes of deindustrialization in Latin America and Brazil, utilizing available classic and alternative indicators. Both in Latin America and Brazil, characteristics of premature deindustrialization are observed. Furthermore, the relationship between deindustrialization and economic complexity indices is investigated, highlighting their importance in comprehending the extent of the effects of this process on the productive structure. The reduction in economic complexity associated with premature deindustrialization reinforces deindustrializing tendencies in the form of a circular cumulative causation. Hence, economic complexity dynamics constitute a fifth source of deindustrialization in addition to the other four described by Palma (2005). Lastly, highlights the role of premature deindustrialization and the reduction of economic complexity to reaffirm the component of dependency in the contemporary phase of Brazilian economy.
