Resumo: Introduction: Capacity for Work (TC) is a dynamic process that, due to the association between human resources and work, tends to undergo modifications over the years. In this universe is the nursing, considered the largest work force in health services. In the work environment, it is perceived that the TC quality of these subjects becomes more vulnerable to direct impacts, coming from the characteristics of the profession. Thus, understanding the TC of the nursing team, from the work context, becomes critical for the construction of care strategies in order to maintain and preserve the health of this worker and their ability to work. Objective: to obtain and analyze the Work Capacity Index (ICT) of the nursing team of a large hospital, based on the seven dimensions evaluated by the ICT instrument, and its relation with the individual and contextual aspects to the work. Method: a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach and a descriptive character, carried out with the nursing team, of a large hospital in the Triângulo Mineiro (MG) region, in 2018. Sixty-four professionals participated in the study, of which 64 (39%) nurses, 79 (48%) technicians and 21 (13%) auxiliaries. An ICT questionnaire validated in Brazil in 2008, plus socio-demographic variables and epidemiology, was answered anonymously. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 21.0, was applied to the statistical treatment and the Pearson and Kruskal-Wallis chi-square tests were applied. For the treatment of the ICT score, the Variance Analysis of Repeatable Measurements (ANOVA) was used, in the post-test the Tukey test, associating with the linear regression test. Results: Females had a predominance of 135 (81%), 31 to 40 (46%), married 88 (53%), and 74 (45%) were nursing technicians . In the overall ICT score, 89 (54%) were considered to be able to work, obtaining a score between 37 and 43 points. 61 (37%) were considered with moderate capacity for work. A significant variation related to the age range between 41 and 60 years was identified, with a value of p = 0.002, being this group classified with moderate capacity for work. The value of the partial regression coefficient showed the value of t = 2.89 and a value of p = 0, 0045, significant regarding the variable ability to appreciate life in relation to Mental Resources. In the Kruskal-Wallis test, no variation of the values of the ICT score points between the nursing categories was detected. Conclusion: the results identified that age and mental resources were the main statistically significant factors that directly affected the TC of the nursing team, revealing the need for care actions that address these and other issues, contributing to the orientation of measures for recovery, maintenance and preservation of TC.
