Resumo: This research aims to discuss about a recent public policy, the National Program of Textbook [Programa Nacional do Livro Didático] - PNLD Field. Thus our objective consisted in understand the ideological meanings of the Brazilian rural area in the textbooks photographs of the aforementioned program. We also intend, in a specific way, the deep thinking about Brazilian education and Geography teaching in the early years of the elementary school; the contextualization of Brazilian rural area in the XXI century according to the concept approaching (countryside and rural area, territory and agrarian issues); and the identification, according to the photography analysis of textbooks of PNLD Field 2016, of the ideological meanings of Brazilian rural area present in them. Methodologically, we resorted to the bibliographical research, iconography and iconology. The iconography is a descriptive methodology and the iconology is an image interpretation methodology. We could observe that the rural area represented in the photographs characterizes the rural social individuals, revealing contradictions and inequalities in the rural area, however, parts of the reality are concealed by the rural dominant class, such as economic problems related to the land and social conflicts, which are represented by the State.
