The last and longest chronicle series published by Machado de Assis, "A Semana" (1892-1897), discussed the mishaps of consolidation of republican sistem in Brazil. Experienced and recognized nationally, Machado dedicated five years of his career to writing texts that filled the editorial role of the popular Gazeta de Notícias in the period when the enchantment of modernity faced the chaotic political and social situation of the country. In a same series, the chronicler opted to discuss the social role of Brazilian women and the political future of the Republic. These texts testify, among other subjects, about the different projects of republican woman that the intellectuals tried to impose to the real women of distincts social classes and races. The object of this work is to understand how Machado, among many other intellectuals, uses his discussion space to discuss the different models of Brazilian woman.
