Resumo: This dissertation aimed to understand and identify two models of solid waste management, cooperative and private business management; their perceptions and representations as ecological subjects who work with residual garbage collection. The trigger that drove this study was the need to know the functionality and levels of understanding of workers in waste recycling institutions as agents of protection and conservation of the environment, and consequently the conservation of human life and other living beings. During the research it was possible to know, in addition to the aspects related to the institutions and associations involved with the issues of residual waste, it was also possible to know concepts Environmental education, impacts and diseases caused by solid waste to the environment and to living beings. The methodology used the research principles with a descriptive, exploratory character and with quali-quantitative connotations, carried out through bibliographic research, contacts through the media and semi-structured questionnaires. After the research, the data were analyzed in the light of Environmental Education (Law n. 9,795/2009) and the law that provides for the State Policy on Solid Waste in the State of Minas Gerais (Law n. 18,031/2009). Within these parameters, it was possible to gather the main subsidies on issues related to residual waste institutions and recycling associations in the city of Uberlândia, socio-environmental relations and the recognition of the importance of workers as protagonists of transformation of the environment. The results indicate that the proposals on waste recycling in Uberlândia are expanding and that, despite the difficulties, it maintains coherent connections with society, with workers and notably with the most urgent needs of the city in relation to its environment. It is expected to contribute to a better understanding of the importance of waste recycling work for the health of people and the environment, and about the risks and measures that must be adopted to prevent accidents and improve quality of life
