Resumo: This thesis proposes to analyze, from the point of view of appropriation (CHARTIER, 2002), some pedagogical practices developed in the Modern School No.1, an educational institution linked to the anarchist movement, which has been operating in São Paulo between the years 1913 to 1919 under the direction of João Camargo Penteado. For this reason, it is proposed to make a course of libertarian pedagogy in historical perspective. It was observed that, as the new school movement, the libertarian pedagogy is also a fundamental component of the pedagogical renewal carried out at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The contributions of the most prominent libertarian thinkers and educators is the anti-authoritarian and integral education, the coeducation of sexes and classes, the pedagogical and institutional self-management, based on high moral values – elements that could awaken the consciences of the students, if they were helpful and supportive individuals in a society that was intended to build on the basis of justice and liberty – an education for liberty. The pedagogical rationalism developed in the Modern School of Barcelona, directed by Francisco Ferrer y Guardia, was very influential to the libertarian pedagogy in many institutions that would be maids in the first decades of the 20th century, among them Modern School No. 1. It is also necessary to explore aspects of the society and education in São Paulo in the beginning of the republican period during school operation. Understand the influences of João Penteado (anarchist, spiritist, Tolstoian, Ferrerist) and the pressures/interferences exercised over Modern School No.1 was the trodden pathh to analyze the appropriations carried out by this institution, which developed a unique and referential educational experience.
