Objective: To evaluate the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the levator ani muscle before and after physical therapy in women with pelvic organ prolapse. Methods: 58 women with pelvic organ prolapse were divided into 3 groups for physical therapy: GI: pelvic floor exercises, GII and GIII exercises hipopressivos: control. The patients underwent transperineal ultrasound sector transducer with a frequency of 4-9 MHz that was measured on cross-sectional area of the levator ani muscle before and after therapy. Physical therapy treatment lasted 12 weeks. Results: The groups were homogenous for age, number of pregnancies, vaginal deliveries, BMI, and hormonal status. Statistically significant difference in crosssectional area of the GI and GII compared before and after treatment (p <0.001), and this did not occur in group III (p = 0.816). With regard to prolapse of the anterior vaginal wall (PPVA), rated in GI, GII and GII before treatment, decreased by 72% in the group with GI, 70% in GII and 14% in group III after treatment. Conclusions: The cross-sectional area of the levator ani muscle increases significantly with physical therapy, in women with pelvic organ prolapse. The pelvic floor exercises and exercises hipopressivos are similar with regard to the increase in AST muscle levator ani. |
