Resumo: Social participation is one of the principles which forms Brazilian Public Health System (SUS) and one of the basis for the consolidation of democracy as well as for the transformation of social reality. Having as theoretical reference on Social Psychology, this research, descriptive and exploratory, purposed to analyze the influence of psychosocia l factors on the construction and fortification of processes of social participation amongst young people from Vila dos Pescadores in Cubatão/SP. Semi-structured interviews and participant observation were performed at a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) which attends young people and at a Capoeira Group, besides visits to the neighborhood that had field diaries as products. The information constructed, analyzed according to Thompson?s Depth Hermeneutics (THOMPSON, 2011), allow to understand how the participants of the study feel the co mmunity and how it can help think social participation, in which local forces, as drug traffic and violence, can be considered as deterrent of the participation, but, at the same time, as expressions of participation. Moreover, we underline the participation at NGO and Capoeira Group as possibilities constructed by the participants of the study as coping strategies against exclusion and social inequality. The perception of the participants of the study about health indicates, in a certain way, a larger view, related to subjective factors, but also to issues from the contexto they live. The gap between Family Health Strategy and community is felt and perceived by the participants, what challenges this instution to comprehend the neighborhood necessaries, especially young people necessaries. We emphasize that the implication on the study brought to the participants the possibility to express subjective and singular issues, (re)creating and (re)build meanings during all the process.
