Resumo: The purpose of this work is to research the foundations of the metaphorical use of the word ῥιζώματα, picked up by Empedocles from the semantic field of vegetation, and transferred to the cosmological discourse to designate the divine constitutive tetrad of all things, in the fragment DK 31 B 6. To that end, firstly, we will try to identify in selected texts of the physical treatises of Aristotle, the common ground that allowed the terminological replacement of ῥιζώματα by στοιχεῖα, as well as the differences that prevent the unrestricted synonymization between the Empedoclean word-notion and the Aristotelian word-concept. Subsequently, within the scope of Empedocles’ verses, we will review the classical correspondence between the gods “Zeus”, “Hera”, “Nestis” and “Aidoneus”, and the natural bodies “fire”, “air”, “water” and “earth”, as well as the historiographical and interpretative tendency to suppress the names of gods in favor of the four natural elements. Finally, having in mind the basic metaphorization of ῥιζώματα, we will investigate the clues and evidences, in the fragments and testimonies, of the origins and reasons for Empedocles’ choice of the word, as well as deepen our understanding of its meanings and consequences for the Cosmology of the poet-philosopher.
