Resumo: The aim of the ethnopharmacological surveys from historic literature is to rescue the traditional knowledge of cultures from the past. The present study searched Brazilian literature from 16th to 19th centuries, looking for reports of medicinal plants, natives from Brazil, with possible action on the Central Nervous System (CNS). It was visited 28 institutions in the states of SP, PA, BA and RJ, and found 532 publications, and 65 of them were read. Plants extracted from the reading of these publications passed by a taxonomic process and had their scientific names uploaded, totalizing 792 scientific names (including their 133 scientific names who are correct, and 659 synonyms). Also, a search has been conduced (20th and 21st centuries), in order to verify if some of these plants were investigated in the present and/or had its uses of the past confirmed. It was noted that 66 of them have studies among the scientific literature of the present, and have coincidences of use for 45. In general, these plants had few studies through the centuries and only three possessed patent process similar to its historic uses. These results showed that ethnopharmacological researches from historic literature are a promising tool for the selection of new drugs, and also can contribute to the rescue of the knowledge from the traditional cultures of the past.
