Resumo: Introduction: Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are the most common surgical procedures performed by otolaryngologists in pediatric age and their effects on speech spectrum remain unknown. Purpose: To evaluate the impact of tonsillectomy with adenoidectomy on children’s speech and voice. Method: Twenty-six children, ranging in age from 5 to 10 years, were recruited for this study. Perceptual measures and acoustic analysis were carried out before, 1 month and 3 months after surgery. The following parameters were estimated using the software Praat: fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer and harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR). Results: After surgical treatment, our data showed a statistically significant difference between preoperative and 1st month acoustic evaluations features during vowel /u/ production. No significant post-surgical changes were detected for the acoustic measures of speech studied when preoperative and 3rd month values were compared. Conclusion: Transient changes on speech spectrum come out after adenotonsillectomy in children with enlarged palatine tonsils and hypertrophic adenoids.
