Resumo: Metrology has achieved great progress in the manufacturing processes but its application in the health industry is still discreet. The technology applied to medical and hospital equipments had become more complex and is characterized by an increasing number of measurements regarding physiological parameters. However, such technolo-gies have inherent risks which may result in adverse events or biases when not appro-priately utilized or maintained. In this context, the hospital medical equipment may have problems resulting in misdiagnosis, inappropriate therapies or compromised patient safety. Periodic assessment, and in particular the metrological performance, are im-portant tools to achieve safety of medical equipment. Given this context, this study aims to develop a technical manual of instructions for the calibration of the Goldman applana-tion tonometer and the visual acuity test projectors, regarding their reliability and accura-cy, as they are widely used in ophthalmology. The main characteristics of each equip-ment were detected. After laboratory tests and observation of the clinical application of each equiment, the whole process involved in the calibration of each instrument was de-veloped.
