Resumo: Purpose: investigate the prophylactic measures used to prevent ankle sprains in high-performance athletes, in woman?s basketball from five continents (Asia, Africa, America, Europe, Oceania), in international competition level, and correlate practice with the scientific evidence found in the literature. Methods: This study was developed on a transversal observational delineament, composed by 256 female basketball athletes high performance, from 18 to 38 years old, enrolled in the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), with current presence in international championships, involving the five continents (FIBA Asia, FIBA Europe, FIBA Americas, FIBA Africa, FIBA Oceania). Results: Out of the 256 athletes researched, 143 have reported suffering some ankle sprain in the past two years and the position 3 (Small-Foward) was the most affected. Athletes with an average age of 25.6 were the most affected by sprain. In terms of prevention methods by continent, it was observed that the semirigid has been used in most athletes in Africa (52.4%) and North America (45.5%). The use of training sensoriomotor was the majority in the Asian continent (97.3%) and less frequent in South America (31.3%). Conclusions: This current study has demonstrated that there is no standardization of prevention measures on all continents. African and North American continents use of isolated prevention (orthosis use of semi-rigid tape) and the Asian continent demonstrated using combination of preventive measures between the taping and the sensorimotor training while Europe used more sensorimotor training.
