Resumo: The present work has the objective to investigate how the medicine student notices his preparation to work with the death during the degree course. For that the qualitative approach was used. Fifteen students were interviewed, being five of the first, five of the fifth and five of the eleventh semesters. The analysis of the data was accomplished using the method of Analysis of Content according to conceptions of Bardin (1991) and was based on theoretical basis regarding the context of the teaching of the medicine, medical education, process teaching / learning, the doctor while teacher, the teacher's function in medicine, the man's relationship with the death, the death as a challenge for the medicine student and the doctor and the medicine student's preparation to work with the death. Conclusively it can be noticed that the presence of the death is a constant in the medicine students' academic life, generating anguish and taking them to develop intense defensive resources. Initiatives are noticed in offering to the academics linked resources like their own medical formation where they can elaborate the inherent anguishes to it, and manly those referring to the death of patient. It is necessary however, to consolidate these initiatives turning them more and more common, accessible and close of the academics.
