Resumo: The study aims to present a characterization of the university-business interaction at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), with emphasis in the areas of knowledge that more had that kind of relationship. From a Schumpeterian or evolutionary approach, it is considered that innovations are key to economic development. Thus, we tried to identify to what extent the interaction university company in UFSM, has shown characteristics associated with activities that have innovative potential based on data available by the Research Groups Directory of the National Research Council (CNPq), period, 2002 to 2010. we find that the UFSM achieved a growth percentage in their interactions with companies similar to the Brazilian level in 2002, however, during the decade, this growth was superior to the 2010 census, which returned to match. Compared to the state of RS, only in 2006, UFSM, obtained percentage of growth higher than the state. Large areas of Agrarian Science and Engineering knowledge, were the most presented university-industry interaction in UFSM, representing 45.18% of all research groups in 2010. These areas also predominated at the state and national level. With regard to the relationship types, the predominant Science Research relationships considerations immediate results and transfer technology developed by the group to the partner. In Agricultural Sciences, Agronomy was the owner of the largest number of university-industry interaction in Engineering, Computer Science. The results obtained, it can be inferred that the relationship between academic research of Agronomy and Computer Science at the UFSM, and innovative activities in the companies submitted a localized character, since in both areas 50% of interactions occur in same university town, and about 90% in the same state. The innovative point of view, the university-company interactions at UFSM, in the case of Agronomy and Computer Science, presented innovative potential, but rather contributed to the technological development. As regards the academic point of view, the university-industry interactions contributed mainly to the expansion of knowledge, because it made possible the development of various works of course completion, master's theses and doctoral dissertations.
