Resumo: This research emerged as a need to preserve Sulbra’s building, located in the downtown area of Santa Maria, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Such building is in the hands of the real state power, which intends to demolish it. It was built in the fifties, has striking features of modernism found in few buildings in this city, and indicates the insertion of this architectural style in this territory. The research is based on a bibliographical review that aimed to understand the importance of memory and places of memory, as well as the concept of cultural heritage and the problematic that includes its identification. It presents a methodology that includes historical research of the area and object of study, besides the methods of identification of material cultural heritage, such as the trust-listed heritage and inventory. Lastly, there is here the product of this dissertation which is the inventory of the building at issue, as well as its conclusion, which positively asserts the intention of this study.
