Science, Technology and Innovation are one of the pillars for the growth of a nation. The public manager or government, who is concerned about the medium and long term scenario of their country, needs to have in his agenda appropriate policies of incentive in this area. The history of science promotion in Brazil is recent and is just over 100 years old. The country has grown and transformed considerably over the past five decades. Advanced nations that have investments in ST&I area tend to develop and public investment is the key in this regard. Based on this context, it can be inferred that the globalized economy moves on the basis of the innovative capacity that countries and companies have. The government is primarily responsible for the growth and technological and social advancement of a nation and should promote actions to encourage the area of ST&I and be able to control and evaluate the results of its planning over the established periods. The present study aims to investigate how an alignment would be evidenced through the research projects registered by UFSM, in the period from 2012 to 2015, in relation to the NSST&I 2012-2015. To this end, it is intended to classify the projects registered in UFSM between this years according to the priority programs of the NSST&I 2012-2015, to discriminate, by Unit of Education, the research projects of the analyzed period, according to the strategic areas of the NSST&I 2012-2015 and to suggest mechanisms for it to materialize in the actions of research and planning of public policies of ST&I in UFSM. As a methodological strategy, an exploratory and descriptive research on the subject is proposed, through a bibliographical survey that allows to develop the theoretical discussions and the documentary survey in reports and official materials. The data collection of the research projects was carried out in the UFSM database, made available by the Institution. Through content analysis, the projects will be classified within one of the categories that represent the priority areas and programs defined by the government in the NSST&I, according to the frame of reference built for this purpose. It was concluded that there would be a 43.14% alignment between the promotion of research carried out by UFSM and NSST&I 2012-2015 for this period A balance was observed between surveys considered aligned and not aligned with NSST&I. The number of non-aligned projects was higher, accounting for just over half of the Institution’s projects registered in this period.
