Resumo: | Approximately 1/3 of the world's population does not get adequate sleep, which contributes to the emergence of chronic diseases. Behavioral measures are essential to improve sleep quality and non-pharmacological therapies are part of the treatment of insomnia. The use of Integrative and Complementary Health Practices (PICS) is recognized in Brazil and around the world, and their health benefits have been studied. The Laying on of Hands (LH) involves the transfer of vital energy through touch, and encompasses techniques such as Reiki, Therapeutic Touch and Healing Touch, and its effect on factors such as anxiety, depression and stress have already been described in systematic reviews; The effect on sleep quality has not been reviewed to date. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of LH on the quality of sleep in adults and the elderly. This is a systematic review of randomized clinical trials, which will be conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses - PRISMA (PAGE et al., 2021). Clinical trials with the adult and elderly population were included, whose intervention involved LH techniques and outcomes, sleep quality and related domains, written in Portuguese, English, Spanish or Japanese. The selection of articles was carried out by pairs, as well as data collection and risk of bias analysis with the Rob2 tool (Higgins, 2019). In total, 17399 articles were found, of which only 8 were eligible for the systematic review. The studies involved only the Reiki and Therapeutic Touch techniques, and were carried out in different populations. The results demonstrated an improvement in sleep quality in the groups that received LH as an intervention, however, it was not possible to synthesize the results in a meta-analysis, due to the heterogeneity of the studies found. Most of the studies were classified as low quality, while only 1 study presented moderate quality with some considerations. Thus, the literature shows a positive effect of LH on sleep quality. |
