Resumo: Domestic violence against women is not a recent phenomenon, its origins lie in the patriarchal structure that is unfortunately still present today. Violence against women is gender-based violence, as it involves aggression, abuse and repression between men and women, which recurs and impacts women negatively. In this context, media plays a very important role: it has the power of giving visibility to diverse matters, such as the movement for gender equality. However, it also reflects social realities and displays cases of violence. This research aims to understand and analyze how the media presents cases of domestic violence against women on Facebook, as well as a group of citizens’ response to these news. A documentary research method was employed, using a qualitative, descriptive and cross-sectional approach, with data triangulation through interviews. The sample of the study comprised five news articles published in a newspaper in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, along with 59 comments related to the articles. For the interviews, 20 participants were intentionally selected with the intent of obtaining a representative sample of the population. Data analysis revealed that the media tends to highlight cases of femicide or incidents involving famous individuals, while failing to critically examine the phenomenon of violence. Regarding readers’ perceptions, it was found that their understanding of violence is often individualistic and lacks a social, cultural and historical context. It is considered that, as an alternative to changing this scenario, the media itself can serve as an effective tool for educating the public about violence and gender issues.
