Resumo: | The current study analyzes the depiction of Gothic elements within Eça de Queirós’ novels O crime do Padre Amaro (1875), O primo Basílio (1878), and Os Maias (1888). In the aforementioned novels, which belong to Queirós’ realistic-naturalistic literary productions, such characteristics are analyzed based on the idea of gothic topoi, which is a term adopted in this research, for the gothic conventional elements are found in the narratives as generalized and repeated ideas (CURTIUS, 2003) inherent in the realistic aesthetics. To do so, firstly it is presented how the ecian critics dealt with that subject matter, secondly, it is provided some reflections upon the concept of gothic, and finally, it is examined the understanding of topoi. In this sense, the research seeks to study how the gothic topoi pervades the composition of plots, settings, and characters in those narratives, unfolding how these three narratives benefit from their association to gothic conventions. This study was financed in part by the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - Brasil (CAPES) - Finance Code 001. |
