Resumo: Infrabony defects are anatomic defects that overtake attachment periodontal tissues and can differ in extension and severity. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to estimate the prevalence and extension of infrabony defects in a rural population of South of Brazil. Periodontal clinical exams, such as Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI), Visible Plaque Index (VPI), Probing depth (PD), Bleeding on probing (BoP), and Clinical Attachment Level (CAL) in six sites per tooth, except in third molars. Data of full set periapical radiographs were as a method of defects diagnostic, such as for measuring of depth and angle of vertical loss bone. Of the 584 individuals who had entire clinical and radiographic exams, 178 were evaluated. The evaluations were performed by a trained and calibrated examiner. The prevalence of infrabony defects was 95.5%, been in the region anterior mandibular (36.65%) the major presence of these lesions. Until 5 infrabony defects were observed in 73.03% of individuals, 21.91% had 6-10 defects, and 5.5% had 11-18 (Extension). The infrabonyaverage depth was 2,75mm and 89.5% with an angle <33°. A comprehensive description of the prevalence of these conditions can help in strategies of prevention and treatment atthe population level.
