Public policies for professional and technological education in Brazil have historically undergone changes related to the fluctuations experienced by the country's productive model. This research investigates the perception of the category of work that guided the curricular proposals of the first integrated technical courses offered by the Colégio Técnico Industrial de Santa Maria (CTISM). The relevance of the topic lies in the importance attributed to professional education by the governments of that period, which allows us to establish a fruitful relationship between past experiences and future expectations. The research consists of bibliographic and documentary analyses, through which we sought to identify the meaning of the category of work in the social arrangements of the historical period analyzed, in the late 1960s.
