Resumo: Energy efficiency is one of the most important means of ensure the economic, social and enviroment development because the increase of energy consume is becoming higher in most of developed countries and in a lot of developing countries. There are two main worries related to the higher use of energy. The first one is concerned to the attendance viability of this increasing demand and the other one to the enviromental sustentability of this process. The higher demand of society increases the energy consume with a correspondingly enviromental demage by the use of the natural resources that exhaust or by the negative enviromental or social impacts caused since its production. In this context, the energy efficiency actions become as a strong choice because decrease the bad use of the energy and promote a more racional and efficient use of the existent energy. The objective of this study that is a partnership between the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria and the Santa Maria AES Sul enterprise, is to present a Plan to Improvement the Energy Efficiency in the Illumination of the University Hospital of Santa Maria, looking for the simplicity and objectivity required to the urgent changing necessity of illumination systems composed by old technologies that are not efficient and are in use in this hospital, resulting in permanent benefits to its the users, because the unconfortable feeling caused by the illumination system is usually related to the illumination technology and the level of illumination. This study also took into account the energy consume economy, the influence of the illumination to the health, performance and comfort of the users. The results presented make possible to conclude that based in the energy economy of 27,6% (twenty-seven point six percent) of the installed power referred to the substitution of the University Hospital of Santa Maria (HUSM) illumination, with an instant decrease of 45,6 (fourty-five point six) kW of power, that the management of the energy is essential, specially when this energy supply figure as an important value in the global consume.
