Resumo: Pig farming is a growing industry that plays a fundamental role in meat production. The generation of waste in this activity represents a growing environmental challenge, since if not disposed of properly, it can cause damage to soil, water, and air. We conducted a survey on local and regional management of waste management, using information from the environmental licensing processes of enterprises in three municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul. The objective was to map the waste disposal areas and verify whether there were overlapping areas. We confirmed the occurrence of overlapping application areas and the lack of integration of licensing data between licensing entities. At the end, alternatives were presented to improve the licensing process for this activity, such as: integration and adaptation between mapping systems already existing in the state (e.g., SICAR, SIOUT, SIGFEPAM), experience with other software used in other states (e.g., SGAS, etc. Furthermore, our results also guide new studies regarding the level of contamination in these overlapping areas. Finally, we confirmed the need for improved waste management, reassessment of legislation, environmental licensing criteria for pig farming activities and increased monitoring to improve the environmental licensing process for this activity.
