Resumo: The process of human aging is surrounded by concerns due to the increase in life expectancy and the great social impact that is behind it. Work is the main activity performed in adulthood, which is a source of sustenance and often social recognition. This study highlights the issues related to the preparation for retirement and retirement of federal public servants, and it is of the utmost importance to think and seek strategies to face this moment of transition from work life, to the life of not working and the changes that have occurred throughout of this process as the change in routine, economic change, social relations among others. Considering the legislation in force, the programs of preparation for retirement are among the rights of the workers, with the purpose of seeking guidance on retirement. Brazil still has few retirement preparation programs, most of which are owned by public educational institutions. In order to deepen the study on the subject, a qualitative research was carried out in a higher education institution that has a program of preparation for retirement with the purpose of analyzing the program, identifying the process of creation and implantation, the adhesion and involvement of the retirement preparation program. The study was based on the need to evaluate the existing program, considering the actors involved in the process as managers, the organizing team and the retired employees. Finally, we identified the predominance of women and the technical-administrative category in education both in the management, organization and retirees, in addition, it was emphasized the importance of the means of communication to broaden the interlocution between the institution and the servers.
