Resumo: This dissertation was developed with the aim of describing the perceptions of health professionals on the use of the Multidimensional Assessment of Hospitalized Elderly People (AMPI) protocol. It was based on descriptive and exploratory field research with a qualitative approach. The study was carried out in a highly complex public hospital in Rio Grande do Sul (RS). Thirteen health professionals from different backgrounds who provided care for the elderly took part. Data collection took place from April to May 2023, in a virtual environment and the research data was collected through individual semi-structured interviews, with a previously prepared script, using the Google Meet application. The project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Santa Maria (CEP), under opinion no. 65760422.0.0000.5346. The data was analyzed using Minayo’s Thematic Analysis (2010), established in three stages: pre-analysis, exploration of the material and treatment of the results obtained, and interpretation. The results are presented in the form of an original article. The average age of the participants was 37.4 years and 12 (92.3%) of the sample were women. The length of training ranged from five months to 17 years, with 11 (84.6%) having more than six years of training. With regard to the length of time the professionals had worked at the institution, the average was eight years. From the analysis of the interviews, two categories emerged which dealt with the perception of health professionals on the use of protocols, with emphasis on the AMPI protocol: (a) Perception of protocols in health care practice and their use by health professionals; and (b) Possibility of a multidimensional assessment protocol for hospitalized elderly people. In category (a), 12 (92.3%) health professionals reported using some kind of protocol in their work. They consider them to be a way of standardizing health procedures, with the aim of organizing and qualifying care. All the interviewees considered it necessary to use protocols, but reported difficulties in terms of access, lack of time or professional interest. Another relevant point raised by the professionals was the discrepancy between theory and practice, which leads to difficulties in adhering to the protocols. In category (b), the development and implementation of AMPI within the hospital prevents iatrogenesis, while the disadvantages emphasized were the time needed to apply the protocol. AMPI would contribute to a holistic view of the elderly person, as care is often focused on the disease and the comorbidity it causes. By adopting a multidimensional and holistic approach, these protocols ensure more comprehensive, personalized and efficient care, which results in a substantial improvement in the quality of life and well-being of this population.
