Modulation of acute and chronic stress on NOS expression levels in the rat hippocampus. Márcia Leite dos Santos, São Cristovão-2014. Cerebral response to stress involves the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. The hippocampus is associated with spatial learning, contextual memory and regulates this axis activation. Nitric oxide (NO) is considered an atypical neurotransmitter and participates in the process of memory consolidation and learning, although it is also associated with the neurotoxicity responsible for the activation of the neuronal death cascades. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the short- and long-term effects of stress on NO levels in the rat hippocampus, inducing stress by restraint. We verified that the hippocampal areas CA2 and dentate gyrus seem to be more susceptible to lesions by NO production. The dorsal region of these areas is the most expressive of NO, and possibly the one more damaged by long-term stress. We could observe that acute stress does not significantly alter the production of NO. It is likely that NO produced in the chronic stress protocol is maintained by the induced NO-synthase. Long-term stress is a determinant factor in NO production, which can be harmful to the hippocampus. |
