Resumo: Nowadays the emergence of environmental thematic is undoubtedly essential, then various readings about the environment and landscape work are necessary in a context that interfaces the set of natural and social systems integrating nature and society. We highlight the importance of understanding that the negative environmental impacts in the region São Francisco River estuary are due essentially, to the relationship man-nature and noted mainly by its amplitude, visibility and damage to the local population. The objective of the present study was to analyze the changes of landscapes in São Francisco River estuary between the municipalities of Pacatuba and Brejo Grande from the land use and occupation during the period from 1987 to 2006. A mapping of thematic classes to the quantification of the occupied areas was done, as a function of the magnitude, relevance and predominance of their occurrence in the landscape and, by its importance. Satellite images were analyzed and compared with each other using geoprocessing techniques for identifying the changes between the different types of land use and occupation over different periods. In nineteen years, the estuary landscape went through very strong changes, mainly because of the environmental dynamic was accelerated by anthropic actions. It can be seen the reduction of mangroves areas over the years analyzed, linked directly to aquaculture projects deployment and the progressive advancement of Ocean on this area causing alteration of natural landscapes.
