This study intends to identify, describe and analyze the Pombaline and anti-Pombaline representations in Brazilian educational historiography, that is, in the speeches that “narrate” and describe the history of Brazilian education in the Pombaline period (1750- 1777), seeking to apprehend the way in which their public education initiatives are addressed. For that, we use historiography about the period, manuscripts and other documentary and legislative sources, as well as the theoretical support of cultural history and cultural studies. The historiography of Brazilian education goes through several moments of transition, especially in the colonial period, during which Portugal strictly controlled the colony.
