Resumo: Citation analysis of Brazillan periodical literature in Political Science produced between 1984-1988. The starting hypothesis states that from a cited set of a subject area, one can arrive at this subject area. Bibliometrlc laws are used and the citations are analyzed according to quantity, types of documents, authors, titles of documents, words, subjects of titles of documents and date. The results show ca. 28,3 citations per article, a great concentration of book citation -66%- a high dispersion in the citations of authors and titles, a predominance of single authorship -88,5% -, showing Political Science in Brazil as a non-paradigmatic science. The half-1ife is about 8,8 years for books and 11 years for journals. Two subareas of Political Science are favoured as perceived in the titles of books and papers: State and Government and Politica1 Behavior. The most cited journals are Brazilian -45,25, and among the foreigners, the most frequent are American: 27,7%. From the analysis of the words in book titles and papers, emerges the most content-bearing words of Political Science. From the results the hypothesis is confirmed, although one cannot precise if the analyzed citations reflect the Political Science as a whole as practiced by Brazilian political 5ci entist5. Bibliometric analyses give valuable Information about the characteristics of Political Science. Studies as such may help in the discussion of the value of these analyses, and may also offer new insights on the subject area analyzed -Political Science.
