Resumo: Traditional methods of selsting materials for use in railway construction use grain-size distribution, California Bearing Ratio, Atterberg limits, and weight-volume relationships as acceptance criteria. These methods are not suitable for evaluating soils under repeated loads, especially for tropical soils. Soils with lateritic behavior, which are commonly used in the highway paving due to their good mechanical behavior , can be discarded if they are evaluated only by these criteria. The primary goal of this research is to evaluate only by the feasibility of four tropical soils, including fine and gravel, to the used as subblast materials for a railway. To that end, triaxial load ( permanent deformation and resilience modulus), HYPROP an WP4-C ( soil-water characteristic curve and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity) tests were performed. The experimental results showed that sample 1 (LA’) and sample 4 (laterite) presented good mechanical and hydraulic behavior and are suitable for use in the subblast layer. Sample 2 (LA) presented good mechanical properties, but it is a material very sensitive to the presence of water. And sample 3( NA) presented mechanical and hydraulic behavior unsuitable for use in railway paving.
